Tips to get the best of both worlds during the holiday season

The holidays are a time for family, relaxation, rest, and enjoyment. Christmas meals are often the most delicious and we look forward to enjoy the time with our loved ones and indulge a little.

But how do we enjoy ourselves without going overboard?

10 tips to get the best of both worlds during the holiday season:

1. Change your mindset

Don’t beat yourself up and be guilt ridden when you’ve gained a little extra weight. Try to have fun and enjoy the day. Don’t be too hard on yourself, but keep your goals at the back of your mind.

2. Plan it

Add everything to your calendar — holiday gatherings, work functions, travel, lunches and dinners. This will help you see all your upcoming events and the ways you can plan your workouts.

3. Eat balanced

Eat the good-for-you options first. Fill your plate with lots of vegetables and chicken or any available lean meats. It will keep you fuller for longer and will curb the taste of biscuits, chocolates, pudding, and any other carb-heavy food. You will not experience cravings if you are not hungry. If there’s a dessert or snack you can’t live without, wait until after you finished your meal. Listen to your body and if you are full you might want to resist the seconds or desserts. Don’t stress if you indulge more than usual. It doesn’t mean the day is ruined. And if you had a “bad” meal, follow it up with a healthy and clean one and get right back on track.

4. Exercise

Get that workout in! Keep up with your training schedule. Strive towards setting aside a minimum of 20 minutes a day and how many days a week you want to commit. Even if it’s a quick workout routine you found on Youtube, something is better than nothing.

5. Hydrate

Drink plenty of water. Staying hydrated and getting your 2-3L of water in every day, will help your body in many ways. Not only is water a key component of health, it also helps you feel full longer. It can help you avoid eating more than your body needs. Drinking water keeps the body hydrated and constantly flushing out any toxins.

6. Connect with others

Focus your time and energy on connecting with the people around you. Cultivating relationships can have a huge effect on our mental health and a strong family or community circle has the ability to keep you grounded.

7. Sleep well

The holidays could be a great opportunity to catch up on sleep. Make sure you sleep well as sleep has the ability to further reduce holiday stress, put you in a better mood and also help to maintain weight.

Those extra days off work and putting that alarm far out of reach gives us the opportunity to catch up on all those lost hours through the year.

If you can, it’s also worth taking that extra time off during the holidays just to rest and recover from the year and to plan ahead.

8. Don't booze to much

Alcohol comes with empty calories and it will quickly add up over the course of an evening. Rather have some water following every drink. Drinking water keeps your body feeling full and you will be less inclined to keep drinking or worse – getting the munchies and consuming a high calorie meal.

9. Avoid stress

If you are stressed out, be careful of emotional eating. Food can be a comfort, but rather than reducing stress by eating more, choose to do something active. Whether it is walking your dog on the beach, running or playing outside with your kids – it will not only save you from the extra kilo’s, buy as you do something active – it will help you to relax and unwind as well.

10. Celebrate and enjoy your time on holiday

Enjoy and celebrate! Focus on family, friends, and fun. Don’t let food be your main priority. Plan active and fun things to do this holiday season, so that when you face the New Year, you’ll feel super accomplished and ready to start the new year off with a bang.
