Indoor rowing machines: A buyer’s guide

Rowing machines provide a full-body workout with variable levels of resistance, all in a single machine. Whether you’re supplementing additional training or just starting on your fitness journey, there’s no doubt that an indoor rowing machine can revolutionise your home gym. But which rower should you choose? With so many resistance types on offer, it’s difficult to narrow down what you need. We’re here to help you find the best fit for your training style.

Rowing machine basics: Resistance types

Although rowing machines are all alike in function, the type of resistance each one offers can have a great impact on the style of training you’re after.

Wind resistance

Air rowing machines create wind resistance by using a flywheel, which is similar to a fan. You can intensify your workout by pulling back more frequently with the handle, which increases the resistance.

Water resistance

Water rowers give you the most realistic rowing feel, with resistance created by paddles in a water tank. Resistance can be adjusted by the amount of water in the tank, and by how frequently you complete pulling motions with the handle.

Hydraulic resistance

Hydraulic rowers use pistons that connect to the handlebars to give resistance. While they work perfectly for arm workouts, the handlebars are fixed on hydraulic machines, meaning you lose the ability to do full-body exercise with just this machine.

Which rowing machine is right for you?

While there’s no “better” rowing machine, there’s definitely one that will suit your needs more than another. You need to consider any additional training you do, and what sort of feel and resistance you want out of the machine.

If you’re a beginner rower, or you’re looking to find a machine that provides a full body aerobic workout, an air resistance machine like the FreeForm R2000 ticks all your boxes. It combines a natural rowing stroke with adjustable resistance levels, making it the perfect fit for those looking for a high-intensity cardio workout while still being compact enough to fit into a home gym. Over and above the basic resistance levels between 1 and 9, you can control the intensity of your workout through your own rowing pace.

Originating in the USA, WaterRower machines offer an unparalleled level of craftsmanship and construction, made with American hardwoods and premium materials for comfort. The natural level of resistance is the closest you’ll get to in-water rowing on dry land, and it can be stored vertically to save space when not in use. If you’re after a natural feel or also enjoy rowing outdoors, a WaterRower will fit excellently in your home gym.
